I build a tool that tracks how alcohol moves through your body in real time, so I read a lot of papers about what alcohol does once it's in there. Most focus on one organ or one night. This one zoomed out to the cellular level and connected a dot I hadn't seen laid out this clearly: chronic drinking damages cells, and at the same time it wrecks the body's ability to take in the nutrients those cells need to repair.
What they did
This is a review, not a new experiment. The authors pulled together existing research on two things usually studied apart: how chronic alcohol exposure damages cells, and how alcohol affects vitamin and mineral status. Their point is that these run as one loop, each side feeding the other.
What they found
On the direct damage side, chronic exposure hits several systems at once:
- Membranes. Integrity goes, and the signalling cells use to talk to each other breaks down with it.
- Mitochondria. Function is impaired, so energy production drops.
- Oxidative stress. Free radical damage climbs, lipid peroxidation included, while the antioxidants that would normally keep it in check get depleted.
- Gene expression and survival. Alcohol changes which genes get switched on. In enough cells it tips them into apoptosis, programmed cell death.
The second half of the paper is the part I found more interesting. Most of the pathways that repair this kind of damage run on vitamins and minerals, and the review points out that most people's diets are already short on one or more of them before alcohol enters the picture at all. Heavy, chronic drinking then makes it worse from the other direction: it damages the lining of the small intestine, which is where those nutrients get absorbed. Squeeze from both sides. Less coming in, less of it getting through, right when the cells need it most.
The authors tie that combined pattern, cellular damage plus a nutrient deficit, to liver disease, neurodegeneration, cardiovascular problems, and metabolic syndrome over time.
What it means
Worth being precise about what this paper is: a synthesis of mechanistic research, with no new sample of its own. The disease links are associations assembled from separate lines of evidence, not one trial proving cause and effect. And all of it describes sustained, heavy exposure. Not an occasional drink.
The mechanism is still a useful reframe. No single night does this. It's a pace that never lets the repair systems catch up, night after night, long enough for the nutrient deficit to compound alongside the cellular damage. That's part of why I think about drinking in terms of pace rather than totals. AlcoBalance won't refill anyone's vitamin D.
