Blackout is a memory gap from alcohol: you lose part of the night, sometimes all of it. The usual explanation is one line long - you drank too much. American researchers checked whether something else was in play. Something is. How you slept the night before.

What they did

203 people in the US filled out EMA surveys (short daily check-ins on the phone) for 28 days. 57% women, all of them with a pattern of heavy drinking. Every day they logged how long they slept the previous night, when they went to bed and got up, how good the sleep felt, how sleepy they were before the first drink. And whether the evening left a hole in their memory.

They also estimated blood alcohol concentration (eBAC) from what people reported drinking, and held that under statistical control. The question was narrow: does sleep move blackout risk independently of dose?

What they found

2,380 drinking days piled up over those 28 days. Blackout landed on 15.4% of them. For someone who drinks daily, that is roughly once a week.

Three sleep parameters from the night before raised risk on their own:

  • Short sleep. Each extra hour cut blackout risk by about 16% (OR=0.84, p<0.001)
  • Off-schedule sleep. Going to bed or waking at an unusual hour pushed risk up 43% (OR=1.43, p<0.001)
  • Sleep that felt bad. A low rating of the night predicted blackout regardless of how much was drunk (OR=0.72, p<0.001). Purely subjective, purely self-reported, and it still held.

Sleepiness at the moment of the first drink did nothing (p=0.13). So "I'm wiped today" and "I slept badly last night" are not the same variable. Accumulated sleep counts. Momentary fog doesn't.

One more detail worth keeping. Sleep didn't change how dose behaved. More drinks meant higher risk at every level of sleep quality, and the slope stayed the same. Sleep is a separate lever, not a dial on alcohol sensitivity.

What it means

This is a cohort study, observation of a real group over time, not a lab experiment. People drank where they normally drink and reported what they themselves remembered.

For those thinking about mindful drinking:

before an evening with alcohol, count more than the drinks. Count the state you walk into it with. A short night or a shifted schedule is already adding risk before the first glass.

Limitations

The sample was young Americans, every one of them a heavy drinker. How this works for moderate drinkers, or for anyone past 30, nobody knows yet.

Blackout was measured by self-report. Which is a strange thing to measure: if you truly remember nothing, how did you find out it happened? Some cases never made it into the data at all. The real share is probably higher than 15.4%.
