A small crossover trial put a full meal against a purpose-built snack bar. Both cut peak blood alcohol by roughly 30 percent compared with drinking on an empty stomach. The bar did it on less food.
What they did
Twenty healthy volunteers ran the same test four times, in randomized order, on separate mornings. Each round started with one of four conditions: nothing (fasting), a normal "control" meal, a full meal, or a purpose-designed bar called OFBAR (Optimized Food Bar for Blood Alcohol Reduction). Then the same dose of vodka, scaled to body weight - 0.35 g/kg for men, 0.30 g/kg for women. A breathalyzer tracked blood alcohol for the next 90 minutes. Afterward everyone rated how the food tasted and how full it left them.
What they found
- Fasting gave the highest alcohol absorption of the four conditions, measured as area under the blood-alcohol curve.
- OFBAR and the control meal each knocked that down by about 30 percent versus fasting, and landed at roughly the same effect.
- OFBAR got there on fewer calories.
- Taste and texture scored well. People reported feeling satisfied, not overstuffed.
The paper gives the 30 percent figure without exact confidence intervals, and it never says what's actually in OFBAR, so the how stays opaque. The mechanism itself is old news: food in the stomach slows how fast alcohol crosses into the bloodstream.
What it means
That eating before drinking blunts intoxication isn't a discovery. The interesting part is the trade: a small engineered snack matched a full meal on less food, and by the participants' own ratings, tasted better doing it. If that holds up in a larger trial, it's a low-effort move - not "eat less" or "drink less," just eat something specific before the first drink.
Treat the 30 percent as a rough estimate, not a dial. Twenty people, 90 minutes of tracking. What happens later in the night, or across repeated rounds, nobody measured.
